Oakland City, Ind. -- U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly joined members of the United Mine Workers of America, Oakland City Mayor Hugh Wirth, and retired Hoosier coal miners to highlight recently-passed legislation to provide permanent health care benefits to Indiana’s retired mineworkers and their families.
Donnelly recently helped lead the push to pass a permanent, bipartisan fix to ensure Indiana’s retired mineworkers and their families receive the health care benefits they have earned. Without the most recent budget agreement, thousands of coal miners across the country, including approximately 1,500 retired Hoosier miners would have lost their health care benefits.
Donnelly thanked the miners for their tireless efforts to pass the permanent health care fix and pledged to continue the fight for a fix to the pension issue miners are facing.
