LATEST SENATOR KING
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King today announced his opposition to a proposed amendment in the Fiscal Year 2018 National Defense Authorization Act that would create a revised Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process beginning in 2021.
“With heightened tensions around the world, our country’s national security must be a top priority, and a base closure round at this time is not in our national security interests. As we saw with the decisions to close Brunswick Naval Air Station in 2005 and Loring Air Force Base in 1991 – base closures can have profound impacts on families and communities in the region. Maine’s major military installations, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Limestone, are shining examples of how hardworking men and women in our state serve in support of our national defense, and we must remain committed to protecting them as they work to protect us.”
