McCaskill: ‘Shame on’ Education Secretary DeVos for trying to ‘shoehorn’ the History of Historically Black Colleges and Universities into her Partisan Talking Points
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today spoke out against Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ inaccurate statement that, “[Historically Black Colleges and Universities] are real pioneers when it comes to school choice”—citing their true founding as the only higher-education option for black students in the Jim Crow South. McCaskill responded that, “trying to shoehorn the racist history in our country into her talking points about school choice” is wrong and should be corrected.
“Betsy DeVos has been given one of the most important positions in education in this country—and call me old-fashioned, but I think it is pretty important that the Secretary of Education have a basic working knowledge of history,” said McCaskill, a graduate of Missouri public schools. “Now let's be clear what Historically Black Colleges and Universities were. It wasn't about a choice. It was about racism.”
