Following Equifax Hack, McCaskill Continues Pushing Bill to Empower Consumers, Strengthen Credit Reporting Accuracy
WASHINGTON – Following the data breach from credit reporting agency Equifax which left nearly 143 million Americans exposed, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today is continuing to push legislation to empower consumers by enhancing the accuracy of their credit reports and making it easier to dispute potential errors.
“Missourians’ credit history can affect everything from getting a job they want, to buying a house—and consumers should be able to have quick, secure access to reports about their own credit,” said McCaskill, a former Missouri State Auditor. “We’re seeing companies take advantage of consumers by making that process difficult – and too often, they are left without a clear remedy when disputes come up. In light of last week’s Equifax hack, it’s more important than ever we ensure better, safer access to these reports, so that folks can get an accurate picture of their financial health, and hold these companies accountable when there are mistakes.”
