With young Floridians demanding action on gun restrictions, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson stepped into the fray Thursday to encourage Democratic state legislators to get whatever reform they can in the final days of the 2018 session. He also urged them to renew the fight to ban assault rifles when they return to Tallahassee in December.
Nelson joined the Senate Democratic caucus for breakfast, after appearing on a CNN town hall with Sen. Marco Rubio Wednesday night.

Sen. Bill Nelson said Friday that he hopes the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will be a turning point and pleaded with Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump to help enact what he called common sense gun legislation.
“This tragedy should never happen again,” Nelson said during a press conference after meeting with federal and local officials at the Parkland school.

Florida Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson told his colleagues on the Senate floor Thursday that they shouldn’t shy away from addressing gun control measures in the wake of the recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
“To those who say now that it’s not the time to talk about gun violence because it’s too soon, we don’t want to politicize right after a tragedy, that’s what is said over and over,” Nelson said. “Then I would ask, when is the time?”
