Stabenow secured the new assistance for dairy farmers in the recent Bipartisan Budget Act, which offers retroactive coverage to the beginning of the year. The recent improvements are designed to help protect Michigan’s dairy producers from market instability and unexpected losses.

Senator Stabenow Applauds New Investment in Michigan State University Agricultural Research3/26/2018 U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, today applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) announcement of $99,370 for Michigan State University agricultural research. This funding, which comes from the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, will help Michigan State University conduct important economic research on crop insurance to identify ways to protect farmers against crop damage and income loss due to natural disasters such as floods and droughts.

Only $57,000 is currently available in the Public Health Emergency Fund, which is not enough to make a meaningful difference in the face of an epidemic that claimed nearly 60,000 lives last year. In 2015, Michigan had the seventh most deaths of any state in the country and close to 2,000 people lost their lives from a drug overdose.
